About Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation District
The office is located at 474 Bucksport Rd., Ellsworth, Maine. We are co-located with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The District was formed in 1963 to provide conservation at the county level. We educate residents about the value of our natural resources and encourage local conservation. We help property owners in Hancock County implement voluntary programs with an emphasis on soil and water conservation by offering technical assistance and planning skills. We also work with a myriad of other stakeholders, such as county, town, municipal, state government, businesses, federal agencies, and non-profits to deliver meaningful conservation. The District works with NRCS to promote USDA programs that support environmental quality improvements for agricultural operations. We work alongside other Districts with the annual Envirothon competition for high school students. The competition consists of outdoor field tests requiring students to apply what they know about ecosystems and resource conservation in real world contexts.
