About Thomas Jefferson SWCD

The TJSWCD provides programs and services to protect our local watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay. A watershed is the land area that drains to a stream, lake or river. What happens on the land affects the water quality in the water body that it surrounds. Healthy watersheds protect water quality, and also provide benefits the people and wildlife that live there. We all live in a watershed. To find out the watershed(s) in which you live, use this interactive map from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Much of current focus of the TJSWCD is on non-point source pollution, or water pollution that runs off the land regardless of land use.
