During the school year, instructors visit classrooms and guide students in the basics of bird identification, bird language, species adaptations and migration. During outings to the schoolyard, students practice nature journaling and explore their own observations through questioning. Every student is equipped with a pair of binoculars and a nature journal to make direct observations of wild birds in their school yard. Normally, a visit with a single classroom lasts between 45 and 90 minutes and instructional staff spend the entire day working with several science classes at a school. Unlike many environmental education programs, BSP lessons are spread over the course of a four-visit unit, allowing for students to practice and build on the skills they learn on each visit. This also leaves room for teachers to incorporate between-visit lessons that support classroom goals, Next Generation Science Standards, and EP&Cs.
