Environmental Challenges

Crystal Cove Conservancy partners with Crystal Cove State Park and local researchers to understand the best way to protect the park’s ecosystems, but we can’t do it alone. Your students can help by taking part in our free Environmental Challenge series, an online series of modules that invite middle school and high school students to contribute to environmental protection at Crystal Cove State Park by helping to analyze ecological data sets.

Each Environmental Challenge addresses a different core idea, such as analyzing human impact on tidepools by comparing sea snail data, creating a model to determine how plant restoration is affecting butterfly populations, mapping sightings of endangered birds, or designing a new boardwalk to reduce beach erosion. The different modules align with different Next Generation Science Standards for middle school and high school, and can be used as stand-alone activities or as part of a larger unit. All materials are available for free on our website!
