5th Grade Russian River Field Program - Theme: Water Connects Us All
Students will explore the Russian River watershed through a scientific
lens and learn about Sonoma Waters water supply system. This program
consists of a one hour and 15 minute pre-lesson in your classroom and a 5 hour in-person
field trip to the Russian River. Each students gets a field journal. Transportation is free. No program costs.
During the pre-lesson, students
will learn:
How their drinking water
is naturally filtered and
delivered to their homes
How human activities can
impact water quality
How to perform water quality
tests and analyze results
About drought and how to
conserve water
On the field trip, students will:
Tour a collector well and see
the source of their drinking
water
Collect and perform water
quality tests along the
Russian River
Use microscopes to identify
aquatic macroinvertebrates
Explore the Russian River
ecosystem and riparian zone
