High school or college-aged students in this place-based internship monitor for marine invasive species in Council communities, including European green crab (Carcinus maenas) monthly from May through September, and tunicates in June and September through the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s PlateWatch program. The students receive training and are responsible for local outreach at the conclusion of the internship, such as a presentation to their science class, and receive a stipend. Internships are currently active in Cordova, Valdez, and Kodiak, Alaska.
