The Elkhorn Slough Reserve is a 1700-acre California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Ecological Reserve and a NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve. The site offers public access with 5 miles of hiking trails, a picnic area, outdoor amphitheater, indoor conference room, Visitor Center with award-winning interpretive exhibits, teaching and research laboratories. The site supports education, public outreach, research, habitat stewardship and restoration, and volunteer programs serving primarily the communities of the Central Coast but receives visitors from throughout California and around the world. The Reserve Education Program hosts, K-College fieldtrips across the 5 miles of trails, in the Microscope Learning Lab, inside the Visitor Center and in the outdoor classroom. The Education Program staff have created dynamic, hands-on activities for engaging students in grade level lessons that support the Next Generation Science Standards. All visiting teachers are provided training before bringing their students to the Reserve as part of the commitment to expanding and deepening the environmental learning experience for school children. Virtual visits to the Reserve are available with pre-packaged videos and asynchronous lessons. Virtual classroom visits with one of the Education team members are also available. The Reserve offers a variety of teacher workshops that support building competence in subject matter as well as building confidence in engaging students outdoors. The workshops vary from 1-day introductions to the natural resources of the Reserve and its watershed to multi-day trainings in field techniques and data collection. Advanced workshops engage Reserve scientists and teachers to design class experiments and monitoring projects on the Reserve. Additionally, all public and school programs are available to private youth groups, summer camp groups, and home schools. Finally, the Reserve hosts numerous on-site public events annually and offers stewardship opportunities for the public as well as teachers and their students. The Reserve is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from 9:00am-5:00pm year-round. School programs are delivered Wednesday-Friday; however weekend tours and programs can be arranged.
