Designated by NOAA as the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR), we are one of
29 estuarine reserves in the country devoted to education and research. The Reserve is managed cooperatively
by CA State Parks & the USFWS.
Each NERR develops and implements a program that links education to scientific research and stewardship. Each Reserve's education program functions independently, but all have commonalities with other NERR education programs. A system-wide K-12 program (K-12 Estuarine Education Program, or KEEP) continues to be developed with the national Education Coordinators. The K-12 Estuarine Education Program directs the ReservesÂ’ education actions, including implementing the Teachers on the Estuary (TOTE) teacher training.
Environmental education is an integral component of programming that serves educational goals in the resource protection and ecosystem management of Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve. At the Reserve, the operating agencies, CSP and FWS, view education and outreach as powerful tools that help oversee the human aspect of resource management.
